Minot YMCA to host Water Safety Day to train community
Nov 04, 2024
MINOT, ND (KXNET) — The Minot Family YMCA is hosting Water Safety Day on November 16, in an effort to train the community in the skills they need to have confidence in the water.
Sponsored by the Golden K Kiwanis club, the free event is part of the YMCA’s Safety Around Water program, which is designed to equip youth and their families with lifesaving water skills.
The event features 25-minute sessions covering a range of water safety exercises. Certified YMCA lifeguards and instructors will guide participants through practical safety skills, such as strategies for unexpected situations. This includes how to respond safely if they suddenly find themselves in water and how to use lifejackets. The YMCA says the program is accessible to kids of all skill levels.
Safety Around Water also provides an adult orientation where parents and caregivers will learn water safety principles they can use at home, as well as emergency responses.

“At the Y, we know that developing water safety skills is essential to safe and enjoyable experiences around water,” Jayden Rensch, Aquatics Director at the Minot Family YMCA, said. “Our Water Safety Day gives families the confidence to know they’re prepared and have the skills they need to stay safe.”
If you plan to participate, bring a swimsuit and towel, but goggles are optional. Families can sign in at the registration table to receive their assigned session times.
The event will be Nov. 16 from 12-2 p.m. at the Minot Family YMCA. To sign in and participate, arrive between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Children ages 4-14 are eligible to participate. The event is free, and includes goodie bags and door prize entries courtesy of Golden K Kiwanis.
