MINOT, ND (KXNET) — Police say on Saturday around 12:40 a.m., Guilty Sips, a popular soda spot near the Dakota Square Mall, was broken into by a person who is still yet to be identified by authorities. According to Minot PD, security camera footage from a neighboring business shows the suspected burglar breaking in through an employee entrance, where they stole an unknown amount of money — believed to be hundreds of dollars if not more. The incident is currently being investigated by the Minot Police Department. Captain Jason Kraft of the Ward County Sheriff's Department says that many criminals who commit crimes like burglary or larceny are looking for crimes of opportunity. "There has to be something of value that the person thinks they can take and that they can resell or that they are gonna use for themselves or it got to be something like cash that they're just gonna keep and they can spend that but it is a little bit of a crime of opportunity a certain amount of theft is," said Captain Kraft. While Minot does not experience a high volume of theft-related crimes, Captain Kraft says that during the year there are trends in those who commit these types of crimes. Many people starting to feel tired with the election "Turns into where there's maybe one or two individuals that are committing a large amount of thefts, then between us and the investigating agencies, we narrow that down. That's why you see sometimes people go to court and they have 10 felony charges for burglary or stolen property or dealing with stolen property and those sorts of things so we cumulatively combine those cases and try to put an end to it," said Captain Kraft. With any crime where money or personal property is stolen, Captain Kraft says finding solutions to these crimes can be frustrating. "We are the person pretty much the primary contact with these victims so it's frustrating for us when someone has something stolen and we're trying hard to find it to get it back to them because a lot of times that frustration, you know, we're just as frustrated sometimes as the person that took it and they can be difficult cases to solve," said Captain Kraft. While the person behind the suspected break-in of the Guilty Sips Soda Stand still has yet to be caught, the captain says that eventually all criminals get caught, it's only a matter of when. "You might not get caught the first time, the second time, the third, but eventually we're going to get you. Law enforcement investigations, we don't stop. Law enforcement runs 365/7 days a week, all year, 24 hours a day, so eventually you are gonna get caught," said Captain Kraft. Guilty Sips is expected to reopen in Minot on Wednesday.
