The Fourth Avenue NW Bridge demolition, originally scheduled for October but then delayed, will now take place this weekend. During its meeting Monday night, City Engineer Steven Lang informed the City Council that both the bridge and Interstate 90 will be closed at around 7 p.m. Friday night so Minnesota Department of Transportation crews can begin demolition of the bridge going through the weekend. Lang confirmed that traffic on I-90 will open again Monday while construction will begin moving forward as part of a 12-month construction schedule. Signage has already been placed announcing detour plans, where traffic will be diverted to 14th Street NW. Lang also asked citizens to be aware of equipment that is being mobilized into position for this weekend’s work. Originally planned to begin demolition work on Oct. 18, MnDOT was forced to delay work so the telecommunications company Lumen could remove infrastructure from beneath the bridge. The work was well past a deadline of March 23 set by MnDOT for companies to remove its infrastructure. It’s the third bridge of the six-bridge project scheduled by MnDOT over the span of three years. The first bridge that was reconstructed, Oakland Avenue West/Highway 105 was the first bridge of the project and opened back up to traffic on Oct. 18.
