WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Hours before a near-full traffic clearing of Howard University's perimeter to welcome one of their most famous alums, D.C. police directed traffic north of Florida Avenue.
Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign plans to hold an election night event on the HBCU campus on Tuesday night, and the preparations are causing headaches to some locals.
“It was a little bit struggling getting to work," said Audrey while working behind the front counter of a Jamaican restaurant on the west side of the university's campus. However, she said employees were prepared, given the event's advanced notice.

“We’re just trying to make the best out of it, and in the midst of all of this, we get some customers too, but we don’t want to be left alone at the same time," she said.

Inside the Potbelly Sandwich Shop next door, one employee said it took her an hour to find parking on Monday morning. She said she plans to allot two hours for Tuesday's morning commute.
Howard's campus was noticeably quiet Monday morning, as students will not have in-person classes for most of the week.
Students like Michelle Fagbola took note of the beefed-up security.
"Even, like, yesterday, I left for work really early, and I came back home, and there’s like barricades on the sidewalk," she said.
Fagbola, a freshman student from Atlanta, said the violence seen on Jan. 6, 2021, prompted an uneasy feeling about possible protestors surrounding Howard.
Speaking of the police fencing nearby, Fagbola said, "I understand they are doing that to protect us, so I definitely think it’s a good thing, but it does make it feel very real, and very scary.“
Security concerns rise across DC ahead of Election Day
Jonathon Romain of Peoria, Illinois, told DC News Now that he, his wife Nikki, and daughter Kennedy are visiting D.C. on an unrelated visit and took stock of the prep work ahead of Tuesday's event.
“Just to be able to have a slight piece of history to give to our daughter in her lifetime is worth whatever inconveniences we have to experience," Romain said.
"I mean, it’s amazing. It’s an amazing experience," said Nikki.

While various Emergency No Parking restrictions have already been enacted, and D.C. police blocked several neighboring roads on Monday morning, the department said road closures in the area will be implemented starting at 7 p.m.
