Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris paid a visit to Reading on Monday night between appearances at campaign rallies in Allentown and Philadelphia. Harris went to the Old San Juan Cafe in the 800 block of North Ninth Street. The event was not open to the media, and her campaign did not provide further information on the meeting. A small crowd gathered near the restaurant, some holding “Latinos for Kamala” signs and chanting their support. Ramon Santiago of Reading, a die caster for DS Smith and a union member of Local 1419, was among the supporters waiting. I’m very proud that she’s here because it counts for her to be here. Santiago led chants of “When we vote, we win,” which peaked as Harris’ motorcade showed up. Harris, accompanied by Gov. Josh Shapiro and U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, greeted supporters inside the restaurant. Lea Shade also was there to get a glimpse of the vice president. “She’s so empowering to women, Trump is so disgusting in my eyes as a woman,” she said. “She’s extremely intelligent and obviously here for the people.” Jevon Picket, 19, said: “If you’re still on the fence, look at policies. Trump is proposing using the National Guard to deport people. Kamala wants to help everybody, tax the rich and stop price gouging.” Harris stopped in Reading following a 20-minute speech at a rally at Muhlenberg College in Allentown. Harris acknowledged the hard work needed to get voters to the polls on Election Day, The Morning Call reported. “Pennsylvania, the race is not over yet,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do. We have to finish strong.” Harris repeated campaign promises to reduce the costs of housing, child care, health care and groceries, and to protect “the fundamental freedom of a woman to make decisions about her own body, the Morning Call reported. Later Harris was scheduled to rally with special musical guests at Eakins Oval at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Among the lineup are Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey, the Roots and Ricky Martin.
