PRINCETON — Princeton Day tried to change the momentum and put a late rally together in hopes of extending the season in the second half. As the Panthers tried to stem the tide St. John Vianney rose to the challenge. No. 9 seeded St. John Vianney put some distance on the scoreboard in the second half to blank the No. 8 Panthers 3-0 on Monday afternoon in a Non-Public North Jersey state tournament game played on the Panther’s Smoyer Field. St. John Vianney (11-7-2) will now move on to the quarterfinals where it will face No. 1 seed Pingry on Wednesday. PDS (6-10) spent most of the season trying to overcome some injuries and the loss of several key players to graduation and a ton of young player and it was never able to get the consistency it needed. What there was in the young Panthers, though, was growth. “It was an up and down season,’’ said PDS coach Heather Farlow. “I am hoping that those returning come back with more confidence. We’ve had some nice growth this season. We have some people that have never played before and people that have had to step into positions they’ve never played before.’’ The Lancers, who play in the always-tough Shore Conference, took control with a goal at the 4:45 mark in the first period as Kelly Trainor scored in a scrum in front of the cage. The two teams traded chances in the second period and SJV took the 1-0 lead into the intermission. While, the wins haven’t come at the rate PDS would’ve liked it’s a young team that has grown together this year. “It has been fun,’’ said Farlow. “One of the things we worked on all season was teaching them to compete especially when the pressure is on, because it’s different. We have a lot of players that are young and we have to get them to be an impact player as a junior or senior.’’ An impact player for St. John Vianney was Vivian Tardio. It was still 1-0 in the second quarter when PDS was putting pressure on the SJV goal and shot was taken on an open area on the right side, but Tardio came across the goal line and knocked the ball away for a defensive save as the goalie was on the left side. The game stayed a 1-0 until late in the third period when Maddie Tardio did a nice job of getting the ball past PDS’ goalie Molly Hall with 2:45 left in the period. Gabrielle Dooley assisted on the Maddie Tardio goal. It was around that point the Panthers turned up the heat and stayed in the SJV circle. “We wanted to be first to the ball and get some shots off,’’ said Farlow. “Now, we don’t have the stars we had last year and this group is just learning to get it done. We need to find a way to learn to keep putting the ball on the cage.’’ The final goal for St. John Vianney came off a stroke in the final period when freshman Olivia Esquenazi converted. It was Esquenazi’s first scholastic goal. Several of the young Panthers scored their first goal of their career this year and with the growth and experience gained this year there will be more to come.
