Springfield woman selected as Veteran of the Year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield Mayor Sarno, Congressman Richard Neal, and veterans gathered at City Hall to announce the 2024 Veteran of the Year and the Veterans Day Parade Marshal.
This ceremony at City Hall was all about honoring two veterans who have made many contributions to the city of Springfield. On Monday they were able to leave with special titles.

The 2024 Veteran of the Year award went to Toni Hendrix, a veteran who does a lot of behind-the-scenes work throughout the city for veteran events and workshops. Hendrix is also known to be a speaker at local schools and she worked at recruiting centers.
Every year the Veteran of the Year Award is given to a Springfield veteran resident who is always volunteering in the community.
"Sometimes the soldiering gets lost so to be acknowledged for serving my country and the fight for freedom, justice, and women back in the day when I was in. It means a lot to be recognized as a woman and a veteran," said Toni Hendrix, a veteran of the year in Springfield.
Veterans Day is right around the corner on November 11th and so is the Veteran Day Parade where the community comes out to show their appreciation for the country's heroes. Matthew Ferri will be the Marshal for the parade.
Springfield's annual Veteran's Day Parade & Wreath Laying Ceremony will be held on November 11th at 11:00 a.m. The parade kicks off AT Springfield Technical Community College and will go down State Street to City Hall where a ceremony and wreath laying at the Veterans' Monuments.
