Savannah man convicted of deadly stabbing, DA's Office says

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — A Chatham County jury found a man guilty of stabbing a man to death in 2022.
On Nov. 1, 2024, Kenneth Paul Mayes, Jr., 42, of Savannah, was found guilty of three counts of voluntary manslaughter, one count of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated battery and two counts of possession of a knife during the commission of a felony.
Mayes was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
Mayes fatally stabbed James Walter Miller on May 17, 2022. The incident began earlier in the day with a dispute between Mayes and Miller, the Chatham County District Attorney's Office said.
The dispute was initially resolved with Mayers leaving the residence, but sometime later, Mayes returned. Miller was asleep in his bed.
Mayes then attacked Miller with a knife and killed him.
The lead prosecutors were Assistant District Attorneys Renorda Herring and Harrison Pratt. District Attorney Shalena Cook Jones said that she commends the Assistant District Attorneys, as well as Sgt. Travis Duncan of the Savannah Police Department.
