Roads could become slick after New Mexico snow showers, DOT warns
Nov 04, 2024
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Areas of New Mexico saw their first snowfall of the season on Monday. This event includes parts of northern New Mexico, the Foothills, and the East Mountains.
It's a chilly day in the metro, and most of the snow has been hitting the ground and melting. However, in other areas, the wintry landscape created difficult driving conditions, like near Tijeras.
"As far as getting out onto the roads, when it's snowing, we discourage it. Let our guys do our job and keep the roads clear. If you do see a plow, stay at least 50 feet behind it. They are spreading salt and sand on the road, and you don't want to get that on your car," said New Mexico Dept. of Transportation (NMDOT) Spokesperson Jim Murray.

The snow started coming down in northeast Albuquerque in the early afternoon, particularly near the bottom of the Sandias. However, I-40 and Juan Tabo saw some flakes as well. If heading east, drivers could expect limited visibility, slick roads, and more snow.
According to NMDOT, New Mexico Road 14, which goes through Cerrillos and Madrid, was cshut down Monday afternoon.
NMDOT said temperatures are expected to drop, and this could create ice on the roads. If possible, drivers are asked to keep off the roads. If you need to drive, they suggest going below the speed limit and being mindful.
Additionally, parts of northern New Mexico saw wintry conditions as well. NMDOT said I-25 northbound from Raton to the Colorado state line is closed.
