One winter storm moves out with another on the way
Nov 04, 2024
An early season winter storms has brought rain and snow to New Mexico. An even stronger storm system moves in starting Wednesday that will bring even more rain and snow.
A strong storm system has been moving across New Mexico Monday, bringing snow all the way down to as low as 5,500' in central and northern New Mexico. Over 12" of snow has fallen in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with snow all the way down to Albuquerque's Northeast Heights. This evening, the storm continues to swirl over eastern New Mexico. The rain and snow will continue to wrap up from west to east through late tonight, with the last of the rain and snow ending by midnight in northeast New Mexico. Temperatures have been dramatically colder today across most of the state, and this will bring very cold temperatures Tuesday morning.
Briefly quieter and drier weather returns for Election Day Tuesday. It will be a chilly morning, with high temperatures staying cooler than normal in the afternoon. But the day will be much drier, sunny, and calmer across the state. Rain and snow will begin moving back into northwest New Mexico and southwest Colorado though as our next storm system begins moving into New Mexico.
A major winter storm will begin impacting New Mexico Wednesday. A strong cold front will be moving in from the northwest, quickly dropping temperatures and dropping snow levels down to valley floors. At the same time, a backdoor cold front will be moving in from the northeast, also bringing a sharp drop in temperatures. Rain and snow will spread across the state Wednesday night, with accumulating snowfall into Thursday. Major travel impacts are likely through the day Thursday across the northern half of New Mexico. Gusty winds could also result in blowing snow and blizzard conditions in parts of the state. These impacts will continue through Friday before the state moves out of the state Friday night. The details of this storm continue to change and will continue to update, so stay tuned for the latest details as we get a better idea on the timing and impacts from this storm. What we do know though is that there will be significant impacts from this storm in parts of the state starting as early as Wednesday night.
Drier air moves in this weekend. Temperatures will also slowly warm up starting Saturday, but cooler weather will likely stick around.
