Taunton police warn of phone scams claiming to be police, asking for money
Nov 04, 2024
TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) — The Taunton Police Department advises the public to be alert for scam calls from individuals who claim to be police, asking for money to be sent electronically.
During the fraudulent call, the scammers claim to be Massachusetts police, and tell the recipients they have a warrant out for their arrest, or that they owe a fine, which they claim must be paid for over the phone.
To add a false sense of legitimacy, the scam callers have hacked caller IDs to display the real Taunton Police Department business line phone numbers.
Additionally, some recipients have been told that a relative has been arrested overseas and need to be bailed out.
Taunton police say payments will never be requested over the phone by any law enforcement agency, and ask residents to be aware of similar scam calls.
Police warn that money sent electronically is highly unlikely to be recovered,
Police say if residents receive a scam call, they are advised to hang up and call Taunton police at 508-824-7522.
