PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence Police Department stepped in to help a family on Monday that was living in an apartment without any furniture. Brandilee Cardente is a single mom who lost both her parents in 2022, leaving her overwhelmed and missing her support system. Officer Jose Deschamps works closely with the nonprofit, Children's Friend, and heard through the organization that Cardente and her son had no furniture in their home. Scouting for Food: How you can help families in need Deschamps jumped into action, working with other members of Providence police to collect things like beds, dressers and rugs to furnish Cardente's apartment. I needed a lot more, but I didn't want to be greedy," Cardente said. "Shoutout to the Providence Police Department because they really come through when you need it." With the holidays right around the corner, Deschamps said he's grateful the department was able to help someone in need. "It was a privilege to be here," Deschamps said. "I’ve been here for 30 years. I look forward to being here a little bit longer, and I just want to continue to give back to my community." Police Chief Oscar Perez also helped to bring in furniture for Cardente. He echoed Deschamps' sentiments. "This is a great city, but unfortunately there’s challenges," Perez said. "So, if we can provide resources to ensure that families have the basic needs that all families should have, I’m proud of that." If you would like to donate to Children's Friend click here.
