Clean up in Newcastle after Sunday tornado
Nov 04, 2024
NEWCASTLE, Okla. (KFOR) — Newcastle Elementary School took a direct hit from Sunday's EF 1 tornado that touched down. Construction crews worked hard on Monday morning to clean up and get the roof fixed quickly.
The metal roof was ripped off the gym of the 4th and 5th grade center at the elementary school early Sunday morning.
Newcastle Elementary to hold virtual days following overnight storm damage
"The school contacted us on Sunday morning pretty early. And so we immediately started mobilizing to get out here to help them out," said Michael Bridges, the Senior Commercial Project Manager of Next Phase Roofing and Construction.
Michael Bridges said debris was everywhere and it covered the parking lot of the school.
"It was a mess, to be honest with you. The debris was pretty wild. Any time you have a roof completely ripped off and rolled into the parking lot, that's a scary situation. So it can be overwhelming," said Bridges.
Bridges said their first step was to build custom panels for the roof.
"Then obviously the water remediation as far as their work of it goes for getting the building usable for the, for the children and stuff," said Bridges.
As bad as the roof looked, there is some good news for a quick clean-up at the school.
Overnight storms leave major damage behind in the Oklahoma City metro area
"From a roofing perspective, this thing's about 95% usable. So, by the end of the day, we should have all the cleanup done," said Bridges.
Newcastle Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Cathy Walker, sent News 4 a statement:
We are very appreciative of the support that has been shown to Newcastle Public Schools through emails, phone calls and text messages. We also want to thank those who stopped and helped us pick up the debris along the road yesterday. An emergency board meeting was held yesterday to declare an emergency for the district. The board of education authorized the administration to work with the district’s insurance company to begin clean up and to repair the damage sustained during the storm. The board also discussed a plan to continue serving students as soon as possible. The roofing company installed a temporary roof yesterday and removed the roof that was in the parking lot. We also secured a restoration company who worked to clean up the water in the gym and start the drying process. Students at the elementary will be on virtual learning monday and tuesday while we assess the water damage inside the building. Due to the possibility of additional inclement weather, the decision was made early this morning to have a virtual learning for all nps students for today. The next steps will be to start the process to put a new roof on the gym. We will continue to keep our staff, parents and community informed about the progress as it occurs.
