HARDEMAN COUNTY, Tenn. — A shooting suspect fleeing from officers in Hardeman County opened fire on a state trooper and was left dead after an exchange of gunfire, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Monday afternoon.
Two women also were shot and injured, and an infant was treated for injuries. TBI said the suspect had the infant with him. The women had been shot at another location and were not in the vehicle.
Around 1:20, the Hardeman County Sheriff's Office received a call about a shooting off Highway 18 near the Madison County line, the TBI said in a news release.
The suspect fled down Highway 18 and was intercepted by a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper at 1:30.
"The subject refused to stop, and shot at the trooper. The trooper returned fire, hitting the driver, causing the vehicle to crash just south of Highway 100," TBI said, citing preliminary information.
The driver crashed and died at the scene. No law enforcement officers were hurt.
TBI later said it was unclear whether the suspect was hit by the trooper or was killed by self-inflicted gunfire. However, they said shots were exchanged between the suspect and trooper.
