What happens if it rains on Election Day?

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- As we near Election Day 2024, many are planning to beat the lines tomorrow at the polls but WREG weather experts warn that you may need to beat the rain.
Shelby County Election Commission told WREG that they are ready and will also have support from local law enforcement if they need any additional resources.
"I voted already. I voted about a week ago," voter Bob Craddock said. "Five minutes (and) I was right in and out."
Craddock said he is among the 2.2 million Tennesseans who have already cast their ballots in the 2024 election.

However, for those waiting on Election Day, WREG weather experts warn that as you head to the polls, you may need rain gear.
"Some computer models are telling us we could see one to two inches of rain in some areas but I'm more concerned about the timing with election day and voting," WREG weather expert Todd Demers said.
Shelby County Election Administrator Linda Phillips said they are ready for the election come rain or shine.
In a statement to WREG, Phillips said each voting machine is designed to operate up to four or five hours on battery power.

She also said that her team is equipped with backup lanterns and paper ballots.
Generators will be on hand as well.
"Well, you can bear the weather to get to the right person in office," Craddock said.
WREG reached out to Shelby County Emergency Management who said severe weather is not expected but they are monitoring it and will be prepared if anything changes.
