Tyreek Smith enters transfer portal hours before Tigers tip off 202425 season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Memphis Tigers will be at a depth deficit in its frontcourt to start the season.
Just hours before the Memphis Tigers season opener versus Missouri at FedExForum, it was announced that senior forward Tyreek Smith entered the transfer portal.
A spokesperson for the University of Memphis men's basketball team confirmed Smith's departure with a statement:
"We can confirm that fifth-year senior forward Tyreek Smith is no longer with the Memphis men’s basketball program. Tyreek informed the staff that he would like to explore other opportunities. We would like to thank Tyreek for his hard work and dedication while at the University of Memphis and wish him the best of luck."
This comes a week and a half after Smith stepped away from the program for a "few personal days." which led to earlier reports that Smith was leaving the Tigers program.
Smith has made stops at SMU, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech.
Smith only played in one of the two Memphis exhibition games.
He played 15 minutes and scored eight points, with two steals and one assist in the 84-76 loss to the Tar Heels.
