Breezy with more potential record warmth into Election Day
Nov 04, 2024
Even though the calendar says early November, it felt more like late September to begin the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky. With a breezy southwest wind gusting 20 to 25 miles per hour along with a mix of clouds and sunshine, afternoon highs surged into the upper 70s to around 80 degrees, which actually set a record high for November 4th here in Lexington at 80 degrees. It’s only the 12th time that Lexington has recorded an 80 degree or higher temperatures during the month of November and they’ve been keeping records since the late 1800s! This followed a record tying day on Sunday here in Lexington when the afternoon highs climbed all the way to 78 degrees set back in 1987 so we’ve hot 2 days in a row and could possibly make it 3 on Tuesday.
This unseasonably warm weather pattern will stick around into Election Day as a frontal system makes a run into the Ohio Valley. With more sunshine expected along with gusty southwest winds, afternoon highs will yet again be pushed to the brink of breaking records with upper 70s expected across the board. Despite the winds gusting around 30 miles per hour, it should be a great day to get out and vote. Most if not all of the showers will hold off until after the polls close at 6pm Eastern so the timing looks good in that regard.
We are set-up for a wet mid-week across the area as the frontal boundary slowly works through the region. The rain gear will come in handy Wednesday with consistent showers expected throughout the day so we may finally see a good soaker. We could potentially see widespread 1 inch rainfall totals, which would be very welcome given the drier conditions of late. Temperatures will back off with the clouds and rain around as highs top out around 70 degrees Wednesday before dropping back slightly into the upper 60s on Thursday as more showers hang around the commonwealth as the front essentially stalls out over the Ohio Valley.
Expect a brief break in the action Friday but overall it appears we are headed into a more active and unsettled weather pattern later in the period. Another storm system will develop in the Southern Plains and slide into the region by the upcoming weekend. A few showers will be possible on Saturday with a better chance for another more widespread rain event coming on Sunday as the frontal system moves in. We’ll have to watch the Gulf of Mexico as what should become Tropical Storm/Hurricane Rafael is forecast to be just off the coast this weekend but the models are still struggling with positioning and when/if it makes landfall here in the states. This could provide some additional moisture for the weekend storm system to work with so we’ll keep an eye on that. Temperatures will remain a bit above average with highs into the upper 60s this weekend.
