HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The recent increase in colon cancer cases has led to a push for more screening, especially for people 45 years and older. Check out what's going on around the nation on our National News page While colon cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US for non-smokers, there’s a 90% survival rate when colorectal cancer is found at an early stage. The American Cancer Society has lowered the screening age recommendation age from 50 to 45 years old. Ask A Specialist – Colon Cancer screening “The Queens Medical Center West-Oahu Direct Access Screening Colonoscopy Program simplifies that process. Just one phone call to a trained RN and set everything in motion. It’s a convenient way to take a proactive step for your health,” said Nafanua Braginski, APRN, Queen’s Medical Center-West Oahu. During a typical screening call, the RN will review your health history and ask you some questions. Aloha Bears launch 2025 Calendar: Where to find it “These criteria questions help to determine if you are healthy enough to be scheduled for a colonoscopy without a visit to the clinic. This initial screening is free of cost and typically takes about 20 minutes which is a small investment of your time for your wellbeing. And if during your call, you are identified as someone who is more appropriate to be seen in the office, we will let you know and then we will schedule you for an office visit,” Braginski added.
