GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- New improvements are coming to 10 businesses in downtown Greensboro. It’s thanks to a grant program launched by Downtown Greensboro, Inc.
“This will help a lot. When you are a small business owner, money is tight, and when we approach projects like this, we ... have to think about it,” said Ellen Moore, La Facial Hair and Nail salon owner.
Moore’s business has been downtown on East Market Street for 31 years. Her business is one of 10 selected to receive the grant of $2,500.
“I need it. My salon needed a refresh. The last time that I refreshed a salon was in 2000, which was 24 years ago. So needless to say, it was very dated, and I decided to apply for the grant,” Moore said.
She said it will make a huge dent in costs for much-needed renovations she has in progress.
“I'm doing new flooring. I had wallpaper removed. A complete paint job. I had a tile shampoo area wall done,” Moore said.
Another downtown business receiving the grant is Moore Music Company. It sits on West Market Street. It’s been serving the community for 85 years.
They applied for the grant, wanting to make much-needed technology upgrades.
“We were honored to be one of the first to be selected ... When they did call us, they let us know that our grant application was written so very well and our director of music, education and community outreach, Addison Rose Kotulski, actually did the entire grant application,” said Al Stephens, Moore Music Company owner.
The grant will help make those upgrades happen.
“To know that the grants are going to help us replace our technology allows me to sleep better at night," Stephens said.
It was competitive to win this grant money. More than 65 businesses applied for DGI’s vibrancy grant.
“Making this available is crucial to us being able to maintain our downtown as a vibrant, active and beautiful place for folks to visit and, hopefully, come down and shop,” Downtown Greensboro Inc. Vice President Rob Overman said.
This response from businesses is leading DGI to expand the program. DGI is now accepting applications for another round of the vibrancy grant. They are looking to award more money to another 10 downtown businesses.
DGI said that businesses that applied in the first round and were not selected will automatically be submitted for this second round. Others will need to apply to be considered. They plan to announce the recipients for the second round by Dec. 3.
