Illinois inmate dies in custody at Wisconsin jail; investigation underway

KENOSHA, Wis. (WFRV) – A 38-year-old inmate from Illinois was pronounced dead at the Kenosha County Jail Pretrial Facility early Sunday.
The inmate was found unresponsive in his cell around 1:45 a.m. on November 3, 2024. Jail staff immediately began CPR and called for medical assistance, including the Kenosha Fire Department. Despite continued efforts, the inmate was declared dead shortly after 2:15 a.m.

The inmate, who had been in custody since October 12, 2024, has not been publicly identified, as authorities are notifying his family. Initial findings suggest the death was non-suspicious, with no involvement of force from correctional officers.

Under an agreement, the Racine County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation. "We are committed to a thorough and transparent investigation," stated Kenosha County Sheriff David Zoerner.
