Game show fundraiser aims to bring awareness to pancreatic cancer
Nov 04, 2024
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- This weekend, Fort Wayne Game Show Experience will be hosting a fundraising event that aims to raise money for pancreatic cancer research.
November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, and the fundraiser, dubbed "Play Games for PanCAN," will be held Sunday, Nov. 10. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be sent to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
On top of that, anyone who books an event at Fort Wayne Game Show Experience during November and use the promo code "PANCAN20" will receive a 20% discount, and a portion of those proceeds will also be given to pancreatic cancer research.
Dan Austin, the afternoon host of country music station K105 (FM 105.1) and organizer of the fundraiser, has raised money for pancreatic cancer for years after losing his mother-in-law to the disease in 2000.
While Austin had hosted a breakfast fundraiser in previous years, he had the idea to transition to a game show fundraiser after the death of "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek, who died in 2020 following a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. Austin organized the first "Play Games for PanCAN" last year.
"This just seemed like a natural fit," said Austin, who also noted that this year's fundraiser will consist of more game shows to play.
According to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, the pancreas is a gland located in the abdomen that aids in digestion and blood sugar regulation. Some issues regarding pancreatic cancer are that most patients are diagnosed in later stages and that it can be different for treatment to be effective since the pancreas is surrounded by a dense layer of tissue.
Data from the National Cancer Institute show pancreatic cancer is also one of the deadliest forms of cancer in the country. Pancreatic cancer will account for nearly 52,000 deaths in 2024, which is only exceeded by colon cancer and lung cancer, and is one of the few forms of cancer where deaths rates are increasing in both men and women.
"Pancreatic cancer is basically a death sentence. You don't find out you have it until it's too late [and] until you start treating the symptoms for it," Austin said.
Austin hopes the fundraiser will raise awareness for pancreatic cancer akin to other forms of cancer such as lung cancer or breast cancer.
"Just trying to get as many eyes and ears on pancreatic cancer as we can," Austin said. "Everybody has been affected by cancer in their lives: friend, neighbor, relative, whatever. There's a lot of people -- when you really start digging deep -- that have been affected by pancreatic cancer. So, whatever we can do to help cause awareness to pancreatic cancer I think is great, and I think something like playing games kind of does it."
Those interested in booking a time slot for Play Games for Pancan can do so online. Fort Wayne Game Show Experience is located at 327 E. Wayne St. in downtown Fort Wayne.
