El Paso County included in voting machine password leak
Nov 04, 2024
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — How secure is our election following the partial password leak from Colorado's Secretary of State's Office?
Partial passwords for certain aspects of some voting systems were made public on the Secretary of State's website from June 2024 to October 2024. While it's only one part of the puzzle to access the machines, it's left many worried about potential impacts of the password leak.
Although the passwords have since been changed, the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Steve Schleiker said eight machines in the county were impacted by the leak.
While Schleiker is disappointed in the leak and said it reduces voter confidence, he also believes the machines in El Paso County were safe and not tampered with. He said cameras and access logs were looked over, among other things, to keep our election secure. He said his office's hard work over the past 22 months is paying off.
Schleiker's office also said the people who pick up ballots and those who pre-process them are all evenly balanced by party lines, and now focused on making sure every voice is heard.
"I could tell the voters confidently, there was no cyber-threat because we removed all that equipment. To the physical security aspect of it, it's nearly impossible because I, as your Clerk and Recorder, I don't even have the codes to those rooms," said Schleiker.
If you haven't voted yet, it's still not too late. You can vote in person, return your ballot, or even register, until 7 p.m. on Nov. 5.
