Dispose of pumpkins for free, help a local farm
Nov 04, 2024
(MONUMENT, Colo.) — A farm in Black Forest is offering to take your fall and Halloween pumpkins for free, keeping them out of landfills while revitalizing the farm's land and feeding their sheep.
Vogl Homestead is a farm located in Black Forest that raises sheep using agricultural methods that focus on restoring the land year after year. The farm has been offering its "Great Pumpkin Rescue" event for the last five years, in which community members are encouraged to recycle their pumpkins and jack-o'-lanterns instead of throwing them in the trash.
"We typically bring in over 1,000 pumpkins every season, preventing over 10 tons of pumpkins from going to local landfills," said William Vogl, the owner of Vogl Homestead Farm.
It doesn't matter if your pumpkins are in good shape or not, the farm takes them all. The best pumpkins get fed to the farm's flock of 105 sheep and the ones that are not suitable for feeding will be composted and used the following season to spread in its pastures. The farm said using compost like this makes their pastures more drought tolerant as they can hold more natural precipitation in the soil for longer.
