(NATIONAL) — As the cold weather begins to move in, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reminding parents of the proper ways to keep their kiddos warm and safe while in their car seats. On Monday, Nov. 4, the NHTSA shared the reminder and a photo example on Facebook and wrote: "Blankets are a good alternative to a heavy, puffy coat, which can cause the car seat harness to not fit snugly." The photo shows an incorrect option on the left and a correct option on the right. Choosing the right option includes using a lightweight fleece with a blanket vs. the incorrect option of puffy material. On the NHTSA website, a more in-depth article describes what to do during the colder months when it comes to car seats and preventing injury to a child should a crash occur. Just as the photo and message above describe, the article further explained the need for using lightweight layers. "For added warmth, cover your child with a blanket, or put a coat on backwards over the properly fitted harness," according to NHTSA.
