The Colorado Department of Transportation offers a guide on being prepared for winter driving with tips including: Check that your vehicle is prepared with fluids such as windshield wiper fluid, antifreeze, and gas are topped off and that the wiper blades, heater, tires, battery, and brakes are in good condition. Have essential cold-weather items in your car, including a snow scraper and brush, a blanket or sleeping bag, a gallon of water, jumper cables, a flashlight, and a first aid kit. Take extra time to clear your car of snow and ice before leaving. Accelerate, turn, or brake separately. Trying to do more than one of these actions at once can cause a car to slide or spin. Slow down - driving fast is the cause of most crashes.
