CHARLOTTE, NC —  Body-cam video now allows each officer-involved shooting to be scrutinized. The FBI is now giving a small group of citizens a glimpse of what law enforcement goes through before and after pulling the trigger. In the basement of the FBI building in Charlotte, members of the community are getting hands on training to learn what law enforcement goes through daily. One training exercise is about the FBI’s use of force policy. Like everyone in the FBI Citizens Academy, Paris Haley gained a different perspective. The situation may be fake, but for both us, it felt real. “Literally the most difficult job. I mean, I think that is real life people who are taking care of the world around them, and we make superhero movies. These are the folks who do the work. That’s why I’m in this class,” said Haley. That’s why the FBI has been doing these Citizens Academies for years. Perspective and knowledge for the work law enforcement does says special agent in charge, Phil Vanwyngarden. “It allows us to bring them into the FBI to see how we do our business, how we protect the American people, how we uphold the Constitution, but also importantly for us, it lets us learn from them what their needs are,” explained Vanwyngarden. The 7 week class covers all aspects of what the FBI deals including cyber security, missing children, and political corruption. E’MARIE HOLT CITIZENS ACADEMY STUDENT “I think anybody would benefit from these all the citizens academies tell you something that you wouldn’t otherwise learn elsewhere,” said citizens academy participant, E’Marie Holt.
