SANGER, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A Sanger chicken processing plant was evacuated early Monday morning after an ammonia leak, according to the Sanger Fire Department.
Sanger fire crews responded to Pittman Farms at 1489 K Street around 3 a.m. for an ammonia smell.
Sanger Fire Chief Greg Tarascou said when crews arrived they found a faint ammonia smell.
After investigating Tarascou says they determined it was a bit of a larger leak than they originally thought. A hazmat team responded to help mitigate the situation and determined it was isolated to a freezer room.
Crews are actively working to ventilate the source of the leak.
Around 100 people were evacuated and firefighters are asking for people to avoid the area.
