Tidewater soccer stadium expected to open in April
Nov 04, 2024
PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WPRI) — The Stadium at Tidewater Landing is still under construction but 12 News got an inside look.
General Manager Paul Byrne said the 10,500-capacity stadium is about 65% done and set to open in April.
It will not only be the home field for Rhode Island FC but also a multi-purpose venue featuring concerts, community events, and more.
"We're going to be quite bullish about this project, we're going to put everything we possibly can into this and then some," Byrne said.

Byrne has overseen the construction of the new home of RIFC from the beginning and said it will be the best multi-purpose USL soccer venue around.
"We owe it to the state, we owe it to the people here, each day we're going to be concentrating on that full fan experience," he explained. "You think a little about Gillette Stadium and maybe where your closest seat is to the field, your front row seat is probably our last row seat."
Byrne said Levy Restaurants is their national partner for catering, but he has been trying to bring in local food vendors. He has also been coming up with ideas on how to honor McCoy Stadium.
"I've talked to a lot of folks from Pawtucket, even generally in Rhode Island, they talk to me a lot about their experience at McCoy, were going to pay homage to McCoy, McCoy was special, this will be that special place again for them," he said.

Concerts and events will also be held at the stadium, opening up endless possibilities.
"I'm going to keep it open year-round, we're going to work on potentially putting some sort of holiday activation in here," Byrne said. "we're really trying to tap into local, we've been in discussions with several different local businesses so we hope to have kind of the taste of tidewater here in the coming months."
Byrne said they are also working with Amazon Go — a partially self-automated convenience store — to make it a quick and convenient way for fans to grab what they need and get back to watching the game.
"We have loud passionate home team fans that will make this an unplayable place for visiting teams," he said.
RIFC, which started playing this past spring, has been holding its home matches at Bryant University while waiting for construction to wrap up.
Bringing a soccer stadium to Pawtucket has been in the works since 2019, but the project has faced many delays.
The project is also supposed to include housing, with new units expected to be built across the river from Tidewater Landing.
