(WAVY) - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) released an update on the progress at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project Monday morning. Ground broken for historic $3.8 billion HRBT expansion project According to a Facebook post from VDOT, several concrete trucks drove to the South Side Island over the course of 12 hours in order to provide the project with over 1,300 cubic yards of concrete. During the pour, two crews worked while quality control inspectors monitored to ensure proper placement of the concrete. While this is not the largest pour on the project, crews said the pour is critical to service Mary, the Tunnel Boring Machine, which recently began work again boring a twin eastbound tunnel. According to Project Director Ryan Banas, the project could be on track for an early completion in September of 2026. For more information on the expansion project, click here.
