HONOLULU (KHON2) -- The Aloha Bears are back with their 2025 calendar, and the excitement is palpable among the members of this vibrant community. This year’s calendar promises to be even more special than last year’s as it showcases a diverse range of models and stories that reflect the spirit of Aloha. I’ve been involved with bear communities before, and I’m thrilled that we’re making this a tradition here in Hawaii,” Francione said. He has been instrumental in reviving the Aloha Bears post-COVID since he took the helm in mid-2022. The concept for the calendar came from Javon Blair, a board member of the Aloha Bears and the calendar’s creator. “It all started with a light bulb moment,” Blair shared. “My roommate suggested we create a calendar, and I thought, why not? I brought the idea to Jack and the board, and we ran with it.” In 2024, they managed to produce the calendar in only two months; but this time around, they are taking a more measured approach to ensure quality and creativity. Allan Bennington-Castro, also a board member, added, “I thought it was a crazy idea at first, but seeing it all come together was incredibly rewarding. We had so much fun with last year’s launch, and I’m excited to see how much smoother this year’s process will be.” Bennington-Castro, who has lived in Hawaiʻi for most of his life, brings his extensive experience in managing art galleries to the project. He is working to ensure that the calendar is not just a collection of photos but a celebration of community. The calendar will feature models from various backgrounds with the Aloha Bears emphasizing inclusivity. Blair explained, “We wanted to create a diverse calendar to showcase people from different ages and body types. We have models from their 30s to their 60s, and it’s important for us to represent the entire community.” “Everyone deserves to be seen and celebrated,” Francione said. “Whether you’re a mama bear, a trans bear or anyone in between, there’s a place for you in our calendar. That’s what the Aloha Bears are all about.” The presale for the calendar has already begun, and the initial response has been enthusiastic. Francione reported, that “in just the first day, we sold 22 calendars. Last year, we sold out immediately at our launch party; so, we’re aiming to order 250 this time to meet the demand.” The release party is scheduled for Dec. 7 at Tapas in Waikīkī, and attendees can look forward to a fun evening celebrating the launch of the calendar. “We’re really excited for the release party. It’s a chance for everyone to come together, celebrate our community and support this project,” said Bennington-Castro. The calendar is not just a fundraiser; it is also a way for the Aloha Bears to give back to the community. “Last year, we donated nearly $2,000 to local charities; and we’re continuing that mission with this calendar,” Francione noted. The Aloha Bears host various events throughout the year, including fundraising activities and community service projects that reinforce their commitment to making a positive impact. “We’re not just creating a calendar; we’re building a sense of belonging and pride in our community," Blair added. "It’s about highlighting the beautiful diversity we have here in Hawaiʻi.” The calendar is set to feature stunning photography by Eric Z. Martin and the creative talents of their makeup artists who helped bring the models to life. As for the selection of models, the process has been both thoughtful and inclusive. “We sent out a call for models through our social media, and I also approached individuals who I thought would be great representatives of our community,” Blair explained. “It’s important to me that the calendar tells a story and showcases different facets of who we are.” Francione emphasized the importance of representation. “Seeing a trans male model in the calendar this year is a huge step for us. We want everyone to feel welcome and included,” he said. With presales ongoing until Nov. 11, the Aloha Bears are optimistic about reaching their goal. “We believe in our community and know that they will support us,” Francione said. “Calendars make great holiday gifts, and we’re excited to share this piece of art that celebrates our diversity and spirit.” As the launch party approaches, the excitement within the Aloha Bears community continues to grow. The 2025 calendar is not just about beautiful images; it’s about stories, connection and the power of community. Whether you’re a long-time member or new to the group, the Aloha Bears invites everyone to be part of this journey.
