RIDGEVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) – A sergeant with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office was killed in an early morning motorcycle crash, the department announced Monday afternoon.
Sgt. Devon Lindsay, 26, was involved in a hit-and-run crash around 5 a.m. on Old Gilliard Road between Autonomous Drive and Duberry Lane.
Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell said Lindsay was wearing a helmet.
“This unfortunate accident was preventable and we are mourning the loss of our co-worker,” said Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis. “We are thankful to the MAIT from SCHP for their work on this case and we are confident that justice will be served. We ask the community to please keep his family in their prayers as he leaves behind a wife and small children.”
The sheriff's office added that Sgt. Lindsay had been with the agency since 2019, calling him a "dedicated member" who "served his community well."
The South Carolina Highway Patrol and Berkeley County Coroner's Office are investigating the crash.
