Election Day is Tuesday in New York City and nationwide. Here’s what you need to know about the availability of government offices and public buildings during the election. When do polls open and close? Throughout New York, polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. Residents in New York City can find their polling place at vote.nyc/page/find-your-poll-site. What is closed on Election Day? Election Day is recognized as a state holiday in New York, so City Hall will be closed, along with all state government offices and state courts. New York City schools will also be closed. There is no school for students and no work for teachers. Many schools are used as polling places. Additionally, Manhattan Federal Court will be closed, according to its website. However, Brooklyn Federal Court will apparently remain open. What will be open on Election Day? Election Day is not recognized as a federal holiday, so federal government offices will remain open. Additionally, the Department of Motor Vehicles will be open for its usual hours, and public libraries will remain open. What about transit? Subways will run on a normal schedule, according to the MTA. Additionally, Election Day is not listed as a holiday on NJ Transit’s year-long calendar. The Staten Island Ferry will run on its normal schedule as well. Metro-North service will be slightly altered. The MTA said 94% of normal trains will run, but certain rush hour schedules will be changed. The Election Day train schedules can be viewed online. Will city services operate? Because of the state holiday, city services like trash pickup will not occur on Election Day. Areas with scheduled trash pickup on Tuesday will have their garbage collected on Wednesday. Also, street cleaning will not occur Tuesday, so alternate side parking rules are suspended. However, all other parking regulations remain in effect. Can I still register to vote? Not in New York. Voter registration for the 2024 general election ended on Oct. 26 in the state. In the tristate area, only Connecticut offers same day registration. Do I need an ID to vote? No. New Yorkers will not be asked for any identification at the polls, as long as they have provided sufficient ID when registering to vote. According to state law, the only New Yorkers who should be asked for ID are those who didn’t provide enough identification when registering to vote.
