Rochester walk spotlights mental health challenges, raises money to fight loneliness
Nov 03, 2024
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Nearly 200 walkers gathered Sunday in an effort to bring attention to mental health challenges. Compeer Rochester held its fifth annual "Compeer Mile: A Walk to End Loneliness" in an effort to raise money in support of those facing mental health challenges.
Walkers strolled one mile from Monroe Square to the Strong Museum of Play. Leaders said the goal is to end loneliness through human connection and social bonds. The organization pairs up volunteers with those who have been referred by mental health professionals to become companions, and even life-long friends.
Organizers said the walk was planned to happen around daylight savings. When the days and shorter and colder, officials said social connection becomes more important than ever.

"We all know what we're up against when we're dealing with our own mental health challenges," began Sara Passamonte, the CEO of Compeer Rochester. "As much as we have phenomenal mental health resources in our Rochester community, having a Compeer friend along the way can only magnify that. And a therapist can only do the work of so many people, right? But anyone can become a Compeer friend."
Organizers also noted that this year, through registration, sponsors and a kickoff event, they raised nearly $50 thousand. Anyone looking to donate may do so by clicking here.
