ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It's a historic moment for New Mexico United, as the club won its first-ever home playoff game on Sunday night in front of 11,447 fans at Isotopes Park. 2-1 was the final over defending USL Champion and rival Phoenix Rising FC, and the victory also came in comeback fashion.
"I am so proud of the guys from a response factor, I mean its not easy, we haven't won in 5-games and it could have been an easy put your head down and kind of here we go again, but they just showed resiliency, they showed heart, desire, and they got rewarded for that," said NM United Head Coach Eric Quill.
Scoreless at the break, Phoenix took a 1-nil advantage in the 49th minute, but NM United didn't quit after that, and in the 58th minute, Will Seymore hit the equalizer. Seymore's goal was like this game, a nail-biter, as it bounced off of 3 crossbars but did cross the goal line to make the score 1-1. A thrilling goal lit a fire under this team as they were relentless in their attack after that.
With time dwindling down, NM United would find the go-ahead in the 85th minute, after a stellar cross from Avionne Flanagan would find the foot of Mukwelle Akale and that led to the back of the net.
"I see Ayo gets the ball on the wing and I know he's going to beat his guy, and I knew exactly where he was going to put the ball. I arrived to make the finish, and it was a great play between two players that understand each other well, I feel like. We are going to need that for the rest of the playoffs, so I am excited for next Saturday," said NM United Midfielder/Forward Mukwelle Akale.
NM United now moves on to the Western Conference Semifinals where they will meet Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. inside Isotopes Park.
