ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WROC) — It all came down to Tyler Bass on Sunday as the Bills hosted the Dolphins for their second AFC East clash of the year against Miami. In the back-and-forth battle, Buffalo came out on top 30-27 to remain undefeated at Highmark Stadium. Bills went three and out on the first possession. Greg Rousseau got a sack--helped a bit by a bobbled shotgun snap--and Rasul Douglas broke up a third and long pass to Tyreek Hill that forced a Miami punt on the first Dolphins drive. Brandon Codrington took the ensuing on a bounced and tiptoed 27 yards down the sideline inside the Miami 40 yard line. Josh Allen hit Khalil Shakir to convert one third down, but Allen was crushed on a QB keeper by Emmanuel Ogbah on the next third down to stop the drive. Bass hit a 40-yard field goal to put Buffalo on top first. It was the longest kick Bass has made in the last three games. Dolphins answered with a field goal of their own on the next drive. Raheem Mostert converted a 3rd and 11 on a well blocked dump over the middle. Taylor Rapp added 15 yards to the drive win an unnecessary roughness penalty. Miami got another first down, Dawuane Smoot and Rapp stoned a 3rd and 1 run play. The Dolphins settled for a 39-yard Jason Sanders kick to get even. Bills moved the ball 59 yards in eight plays on their next drive, reaching the Miami 11 yard line. On a short slant, Allen's throw bounced off an open Keon Coleman. The rookie tried to grab the rebound as it hung in the air, but the ball ended up landing on Miami corner Jalen Ramsey's chest. Ramsey held on for his first career interception of Allen and Allen's second INT of the season. Miami set sail from their own three yard line and did not stop until they reached the end zone. The 14-play, 97 yard odyssey took 8:21 off the clock and ended with a 14 yard catch and run by Devon Achane. The Dolphins ran the ball ten times with three different ball carriers for a total of 65 yards on the drive. Miami only had to convert two third downs and neither was longer than two yards. Allen's legs got the Bills points before the half, but Buffalo fans were still disappointed. A pair of defensive penalties got Buffalo inside the Miami 40. On third and 12 from the 25, Allen scrambled for 15 yards and a first down. The next play was a Dion Dawkins holding penalty. From the 21, Allen scrambled for what appeared to be a tying touchdown. However, a small grab by O'Cyrus Torrence during the scramble drew a flag that negated the score. The Bills threw three incompletions from the 30 yard line and settled for a Bass 49-yard field goal with seven seconds left in the second quarter. That cut the Miami lead to 10-6 at the half. Dolphins came steamrolling out of the locker room. Three plays had gained 34 yards, but Taron Johnson punched the ball away from Mostert at the end of the third run. Kaiir Elam recovered and the Bills were in business at their own 36. The Bills went 64 yards on 11 plays for a go-ahead TD. Buffalo rushed for 39 yards on the drive, including a 17 yard scamper by Ty Johnson. The Dolphins stuffed James Cook on second and goal from the two and forced an incompletion on third and goal. Buffalo went for the score on fourth down and Allen found Mack Hollins open in the back of the end zone. Bass missed the point after, which limited Buffalo's advantage to 12-10. Miami converted a third down just past midfield thanks to a Von Miller offside penalty on their next drive. Elam got beat by Hill for a 26 yard catch, but the Bills stiffened from there. Three plays from the Buffalo 11 yard line went for only six yards. Miami settled for a short field goal and a 13-12 lead. Ray Davis needed two touches and 52 seconds to erase that lead. After a seven yard run to open the next Bills drive, Davis took a swing pass into oodles of space. He broke one tackle at about the 40 yard line and went 63 yards for a go-ahead touchdown. Allen found Keon Coleman for the two-point conversion and Buffalo was back in front 20-13. The third quarter ended after a 28 yard throw to Hill got Miami across midfield. The Dolphins barely converted a 4th and 4 with a Tagovailoa scramble. Sean McDermott challenged the spot, but Tagovailoa had the ball just far enough as his shin touched the ground. Two plays later, Achane was in from eight yards out with his second touchdown of the game and the contest was even at 20. The see-saw affair tipped back Buffalo's way on the next drive. Passes to Cook, Coleman and Shakir quickly got Buffalo to the Dolphins 24 yard line. Ty Johnson then converted 3rd and 1 with a four yard run. Former Bill Siran Neal held Shakir on third and six from the seven to give the Bills a first and goal. Two plays later, Allen flipped a ball under pressure that Quentin Morris caught for a go-ahead TD. Bass bounced his point after off the upright and in to give Buffalo a 27-20 lead. Miami got the ball back with six minutes remaining, cruising down the field in a 4:40 drive. Achane started the drive with a 12 yard rush followed by a pass from Tagovailoa to Hill for 19 yards. The Dolphins capped off the drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Waddle to tie it at 27-27 with 1:38 remaining, going 81 yards in 11 plays. Buffalo's following drive started with Allen being sacked for a loss of four yards. On 3rd and 11, Allen's pass to Coleman was incomplete, but an unnecessary roughness penalty on former Bill Jordan Poyer gave Buffalo 15 yards and a first down. Two complete passes to Hollins put the Bills on their own 49 yard line where Allen spiked the ball to stop the clock with :22 remaining. After two incomplete passes, it came down to a 61-yard field goal attempt from Bass. Bass sunk it through the uprights for the 30-27 lead to give Miami just five seconds remaining. In their last effort, Tagovailoa passed to Archane who threw a lateral to Waddle, who was taken down by Greg Rousseau. The win brings the Bills to 7-2 on the season. They'll next face the Colts on Sunday, November 10th.
