What to know about the BREC tax renewals on the November ballot
Nov 03, 2024
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The ballot for East Baton Rouge Parish voters will have two BREC tax renewal propositions.
It can shape the organization in many ways. Superintendent of BREC Corey Wilson said especially how it serves the community.
“It's very important that in order for us to maintain our same level of service,” he said.
Both taxes make up 65% of BREC’s current budget. The first tax on the ballot has been on the tax rolls since 1964, and voters have approved its renewal every 10 years.
“It's about 6.2 mills. Half of that goes towards our operations, normal payroll budget and things like that. The other half goes towards our capital improvement budget. So capital improvements, construction, those sort of things like that,” he said.
The second one is "The Imagine Your Parks" tax renewal created in 2004. The tax renewal is up for the first time and is worth $17 million.
“The 3.2 millage, the 'Imagine Your Parks' millage, can be used for both operations and maintenance and we have the discretion depending on if we need more maintenance or operation dollars or if we need to do more construction," he said.
Wilson said both renewals are important and are not new.

“A lot of focus will be on bringing new recreation centers, repurposing some of our old recreation centers so that they serve the community better, but just the overall quality,” he said. “The community still wants to see a lot of trails and connectivity. They want to see their neighborhood parks improve. So both of those taxes will be used to help with all of that.”
