CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Daylight saving time ends at 2 o'clock Sunday morning, meaning it's time to set the clocks back one hour, but this time difference can take a toll on your health. The sun will set earlier every day through the Winter Solstice on December 21, meaning now, our mornings will be bright earlier, but evenings will be dark earlier. Although only an hour difference, your body can feel the effects. The change causes a shift in our circadian rhythms, our body's internal clocks, and is linked to sleep loss and mood changes, according to the Sleep Foundation. To make the change easier, experts advise going to bed an hour later tonight so you're prepared to wake up to the sun shining a little earlier. Encourage your kids to do the same to make it easier on them, too. Also, avoid naps tomorrow even if you're sleepy, so you'll fall asleep at a more regular hour. Finally, be careful while driving. Losing an hour of sleep increases car accidents around the country, so stay extra alert. Changing your clocks is also a good reminder to change the batteries in the smoke detectors around your home. The Defense Logistics Agency's "Change your clock, Change your battery" campaign encourages U.S. households to practice proper safety measures seasonally, but also all year round. Taking the time to change batteries like you change your clocks can significantly lower risks.
