Class A Quarterfinals (7) Brockport 45, (2) East/WOIS 42 (2 OT) The Eagles entered as the defending Class A champions, a reigning state semifinalist who hadn't lost to a Section V opponent since November of 2022. The Blue Devils clinched a playoff spot on the very last week of the season with a 5-3 record. In their only three games against teams with winning records this year, they were outscored 135-30. That included a game in Week 6 where East beat them 48-21. None of that mattered on Friday night. Brockport waltzed into the city of Rochester and upset East 45-42, getting the victory on Isaiah Markel's game-winning field goal in double overtime. The Blue Devils set the tone on the very first play from scrimmage. Landon Scott heaved up a long pass to Tyler Judd who went 80 yards for a 7-0 lead. The Eagles responded as they blocked a Brockport punt and turned it into an Anthony Hampton rushing touchdown to make it 7-7. After an 86-yard pitch pass from Tyler Benjamin to Junayde Dunn-Richardson, Benjamin connected with Kelvin Shepard for a red-zone touchdown to make it 14-7 early in the second quarter. Then Brockport answered back with authority. Scott had a short rushing touchdown to tie the game at 14 with 3:10 left in the game. Then just before the break, he threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Judd who made a great catch for a 21-14 halftime lead. Scott led another touchdown drive for the Blue Devils in the third quarter, plunging in for a three-yard score to make it 28-14 with four minutes left in the third. With 5:29 left in the fourth, the Eagles got back within a touchdown as Jeremiah Tucker ran in a score to pull the game to 28-21. The Blue Devils were pinned deep within their own territory on the ensuing drive, but on third down Scott connected with Azay Odey who took it 83 yards to get Brockport on the goal-line. Scott ran in his third TD of the day to make it 35-21. However, the Eagles would not go down quietly. Benjamin threw a beautiful touchdown to Shepard with 1:47 to play to make it 35-28. The Eagles went for the onside kick and Yusuf Abdi's kick bounced perfectly off a Blue Devil and it was recovered by Zaire Spears. The Eagles drove into Brockport territory and Benjamin again connected with Shepard for an impressive touchdown, Shepard dealing with double coverage and coming down with the catch on a second effort. That tied the game up at 35 with just under a minute to play. Brockport quickly drove into East territory on just two plays and had a chance at a game-winning field goal, but Markel's 41-yard kick sailed to the left of the uprights sending us to overtime. Each time scored a rushing touchdown in the first OT, with Scott carrying in his fourth of the day for Brockport and Tucker running one in for East in Wildcat formation. However, in the second overtime Brockport defensive lineman Wesley Childs intercepted a swing pass to get the stop that the Blue Devils needed. After three running plays, Brockport sent out Markel for the game-winning kick. This time, he was money as his 29-yard field goal gave Brockport the stunning upset win. Scott completed 15 of 20 attempts for 301 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the ground, he had 15 carries for 72 yards and four touchdowns. Judd finished with 161 yards and two touchdowns. The last time a top-two seed fell in the quarterfinals was in 2019 when Pal-Mac defeated Batavia. Prior to that upset, you have to go back to 2013 when Hilton defeated Schroeder. Brockport (6-3) will visit Canandaigua in the Class A semifinals. In Week 7, the Gray Wolves defeated Brockport 41-7. The loss for East/WOIS (6-3) was their first to a Section V opponent since they lost to Canandaigua in the 2022 Class A title game. An impressive touchdown run by Mullins gave Monroe a 20-14 halftime lead. However, the Red Jackets would shut out the Eagles in the second half.
