Pennsbury football shut out by C.B. West in PIAA District 1 6A playoffs
Nov 01, 2024
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — For the majority of the game, the Pennsbury High defense team did its job in a District 1 Class 6A playoff opener Friday night.
For all of the game, the Falcons offense did not.
As a result, 14th seeded Pennsbury lost to third seeded Central Bucks West by the score of 17-0 at the War Memorial Stadium.
With the loss, Pennsbury finished with a 5-6 record for the second straight year in a row. While that record certainly does not measure up to the Falcons’ lofty standards, the very big positive is it once again beat arch-rival Neshaminy in its last regular-season game to qualify for the playoffs for the third year in a row.
After losing to Central Bucks West, 27-6, during the regular season, Pennsbury was hoping the rematch between the Suburban One League National Division teams might somehow be different.
With its defense holding up against the productive C.B. West running game, Pennsbury only trailed 7-0 at the half despite being on the field nearly the entire time because its offense repeatedly went three and out.
In the first half, Pennsbury had no first downs and only 36 yards in total offense. The second half was slightly better, but not by much as the Falcons finished with two first downs and 80 yards for the entire game.
Needless to say it never came even close to scoring against a C.B. West defense that isn’t big, but is plenty quick and gang tackles by flying to the ball.
To put it another way, there were simply no holes for the Falcon backs to exploit and its passing game didn’t work either as Pennsbury completed just three of 14 passes for 47 yards.
Led by its all-purpose Swiss army knife player Ryan Clemens, the Bucks opened the second at the end of the first quarter on a 10-play, 80-yard drive culminated by a 2-yard TD run by Clemens.
Clemens also kicked a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter to put his team ahead, 10-0, and in solid control.
Clemens has had some monster games this year and did finish with 104 rushing yards, but the fact he needed 20 carries to get them is a tribute to a Pennsbury defense that played its trademark tough physical football this year.
With Pennsbury continuing to go nowhere on offense, C.B. West added an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Vance Morelli.
This was not the end of the season Pennsbury wanted, but sometimes you just have to accept you got beat by a clearly superior team.
