State fire marshal gives safety tips to protect your family and home
Nov 01, 2024
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Red Flag Warning is currently in effect for our area, since the persistent dry and breezy conditions can cause fires to quickly spread.
To prevent brush fires from breaking out, fire officials have been urging people not to do any outdoor burning and to be careful throwing away lit cigarettes, matches and other smoking materials.
But with cooler weather on the way, homeowners are also advised to take steps to keep their families and properties safe.
LOOKING AHEAD: Detailed 7-Day Forecast
Rhode Island's state fire marshal, Tim McLaughlin, says his office typically investigates more fires this time of year.
"We're going to get into the busy season now that people start turning the heat on," he said during a live interview Friday on 12 News at 4.
"The seasons change quick," he added. "We've had some really nice warm weather, all of a sudden it's going to get cold, people will turn their fireplace on, they'll put their wood stove on, and say, 'Jeez, maybe I should have …' and after the fact, it's too late."
According to McLaughlin, routine maintenance can help prevent a tragedy.
"Have your boiler people come out, check your furnace by a professional. Have it cleaned, make sure it's in working order," McLaughlin explained.

The same goes for fireplaces and wood stoves.
"Have the chimney checked, the flue, the creosote builds up really quickly inside there," he said. "It only takes a little crevice for that fire to get into your house and go right through your house."
As people set their clocks back this weekend for Daylight Saving Time, McLaughlin says it's a good time to check the batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
"Smoke alarms save lives," McLaughlin added, "and a dead battery, because you didn't take five minutes to change it or check it, could mean life or death."
