Longshadow Woodworks makes functional art pieces from reclaimed wood

MINOT, ND (KXNET) — The Big One Art and Craft show is going on right now at the North Dakota State fairgrounds and many artists and craftspeople are there showing off their creations.
Aryn Kern and her husband of Longshadow Woodworks make various pieces of art out of reclaimed wood.
All of the wood they use comes from leftover pieces from different manufacturers, which would have just been tossed out.
Whether it's maple, cherry, white oak, or black walnut, they use it all.
Their art is also functional in that they create cutting boards, chopping boards, serving trays, and more.

They do have to be hand washed, but they have many benefits compared to cheap plastic cutting boards.
"A wood board is the best thing you can use to cut on. It keeps your knife sharp. Plastic is about the worst thing. They say you eat about a credit card every year if you cut your food on plastic boards," Aryn Kern said. "Wood is the best thing for your knife. Wood also has enzymes that kill bacteria so you can cut meats and cheeses on them as well and not worry about that."
The couple travels around to different art shows full time, and each week, they make anywhere from 25 to 100 pieces to sell.
The craft show finishes up Saturday at 5.
