Home grocery and package delivery services: what's the best safety option?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With the recent announcement of the upcoming Walmart+ InHome Delivery service rollout in the Rochester area and holiday shopping season approaching, New York State Police are issuing some safety reminders when using delivery services.
Walmart+ InHome Delivery will soon be available to an additional 13 million potential households, including some in Rochester. The service allows customers who opt in to have Walmart associates deliver groceries and other items directly inside their home.
Walmart offers safety features within the service for both the associate and customer, including associate background checks and the ability to live-stream footage of the delivery process. There are additional safety protocols that customers are encouraged to follow, however.
New York State Police point out this new convenience adds another layer of caution for customers.
"Walmart associates would not only deliver groceries to the doorstep but also bring them inside and even into the fridge if given entry," Trooper Lynnea Crane said in a written statement to News 8. "This service introduces unique security considerations. For instance, consumers need to weigh the security of allowing delivery personnel into their homes".
Trooper Crane suggests having additional security monitoring, such as cameras, in well-lit areas of your home can be beneficial while limiting associate access to areas that have valuables or important items. Learning about background checks, expectations and requirements for associates to do home-deliveries, and actively communicating with your driver on specific spots to leave packages and items inside or outside your home are also important.
A common theme to these safety tips is open communication with your delivery associate and protecting your home.
"In Rochester, while some smaller (delivery) services offer similar door-to-door deliveries, few provide the same level of in-home service that Walmart’s InHome will offer," Trooper Crane said. "For any delivery service, residents should keep an eye on package theft (which has been on the rise in many communities) and report suspicious activity to local law enforcement".
For those who may not yet feel comfortable with at-home delivery services like Walmart+ but prefer using online shopping platforms, Amazon offers package pickup locations.
When placing an order, the customer can opt to have their package shipped to a nearby Amazon Locker, often inside a department store. Some of these locations include Whole Foods Market, Kodak Center and University of Rochester.
Rochester has more than 20 Amazon Lockers that customers can choose to pick up their packages at, some of which offer accessibility accommodations. You can find the location closest to you on their Amazon Pickup page.
