TCNJ football’s NJAC title hopes rest on win over No. 6 Salisbury
Nov 01, 2024
The focus for The College of New Jersey football team this fall has been one play at a time, one series, one quarter and one game.
Well, the one game everyone has been waiting for is Saturday on the Lions Stadium turf when Salisbury visits for a 2 p.m. kick off.
The No. 6 Sea Gulls are 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. TCNJ is right on their heels at 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
Besides this being a key game in the conference standings and the Lions’ final home game of the season there’s a little revenge on the part of Salisbury as the Lions took a 36-27 win last year.
“It would be foolish not to lean on that experience,’’ said TCNJ coach Eric Jendryaszek, of last year’s win over Salisbury for the first time since the Sea Gulls joined the NJAC.
“It shows it can be done and then how we did it,’’ added Jendryaszek. “But, this might be the best Salisbury team I have seen in a while. Our message is at the end of the day it’s going to come down to who is going to execute the game plan the best.’’
Despite falling behind early last week at Gettysburg, the Lions worked the game plan and pulled out a 41-31 win.
“There are takeaways from very win and from every loss and it was great to see we didn’t flinch and we didn’t panic,’’ said Jendryaszek, of the Gettysburg win. “The defense did their job and we were able to go out and execute, which was awesome.’’
What makes this weekend such an interesting game is these two are the top offensive teams in the conference. Salisbury averages 48.4 points and the Lions score at a 33.4 clip.
Salisbury averages an NJAC best 328.6 yards rushing a game and the Lions average an NJAC best 334.3 yards passing a game.
TCNJ pulled a little closer in the ground game last week as Jayson Schmidt gained 247 yards on the ground against Gettysburg scoring four touchdowns and earning the Offensive Player of the week honors.
“We have been waiting for this and it was great to see him run to his capability,’’ said Jendryaszek, of Schmidt. “We are hoping we can keep that up as we move to the final games. It’s good because it forces team to pick and choose how they are going to play us from an offensive standpoint. We’re happy where we are at and yet there is still stuff we can fix.’’
Emotions will be sky high in this game and Jendryaszek knows if they can’t be controlled they have to be contained.
“We have to focus on each possession,’’ said Jendryaszek. “For us the reason this game is important because it’s the next one. We can’t look ahead to William Paterson or Christopher Newport. There is going to be a lot of emotion in this game and the key will be who handles it the best .’’
It’s now two straight years the Lions are in the title chase this late in the season and there’s plenty of credit to go around.
“It’s great to be in this position, but it’s because of our players, our coaches and work ethic, it didn’t just happen,’’ said Jendryaszek. “Once the season ended last year the guys that were coming back have worked hard and made the conscience effort and it’s great to see their hard work being rewarded.’’
Another Salisbury win would be a huge reward.

TCNJ SCOUTING REPORT: The Lions battled back to win at Gettysburg and now face an offensive juggernaut in the Sea Gulls, who average 48.4 points a game. Trevor Bopp, who is the NJAC’s top passer with 2.331 yards this season will need to limit the interceptions as turnovers will be critical in this game. Jayson Schmidt leads the conference in rushing with 113.1 yards a game and Bopp’s receivers are among the best in Malin Jasinski, Thomas Burke and Ryan Gill. Dave Giulian leads the defense with 66 tackles, Brandon Kuse leads with 5.5 sacks and Justin Kurc has five interceptions. The Lions have done a good job creating turnovers and it will be a key against the Sea Gulls. TCNJ has playmakers and it’ll need to have a few big plays and the defense will have to slow down the Salisbury attack.
SALISBURY SCOUTING REPORT: The Sea Gulls are top offensive and the best defensive team in the NJAC and have been deserving of the national ranking. Ronald Clark averages 94.9 yards a game rushing and Dario Belizaire averages 65.7 a game. Micah Brubaker is the top receiver with 14 catches for 424 yards. The defense has 19 sacks and is led by Frankie Giannetti with five sacks. They will be tested by the TCNJ offensive line and will want to keep pressure on Bopp. They have only five interceptions.
