BOSTON (WWLP) - In the final days before the November 5th general election, 22News spoke to western Massachusetts lawmakers and locals about what is important to them this election season. This week at the State House, local legislators reacted to Trump rally comments, lawmakers gathered to celebrate their heritage, and a local business owner spoke out about what she'd like to see from her elected officials. Western Massachusetts lawmakers react to Puerto Rico comment at Trump rally Following a Trump rally last weekend, where a comedian called Puerto Rico a "floating island of garbage," Springfield Representative Carlos Gonzalez and Senator Adam Gomez released statements. Both lawmakers spoke about their Puerto Rican heritage and the many contributions their community has made to Massachusetts. 22News joined a local senator for a ceremony celebrating organizations that honor Polish-American heritage. "Both organizations celebrate Polish Americans, which are such an important part of the ethnic makeup of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, particularly in western Mass. and my hometown of Ludlow," said Senator Jacob Oliveira. Senator Oliveira says his community has the Polish Krakus festival to look forward to, coming up on November 10. Following a meeting about the dysfunction of the Cannabis Control Commission on Wednesday, 22News spoke to a Springfield dispensary owner about how western Massachusetts consumers can support local businesses. "What I would encourage customers to think through is to better understand who you are shopping with. Are you supporting a Massachusetts-born and bred brand?" said Payton Shubrick, who owns the 6 Bricks cannabis dispensary.
