MEMPHIS, Tenn.  (WREG) -- The man convicted of murdering Memphis rapper Young Dolph was sentenced to 35 additional years in prison during his sentencing hearing Friday morning. This comes after Justin Johnson was sentenced to life in prison on the murder count. While in court, Johnson was sentenced to 35 years for Conspiracy to Commit Murder and 15 years for Felon in possession of a handgun. The new sentences will run concurrently with one another and with the murder count, which will add a total of 35 years to the previous life sentence. Johnson will be in his 70s before he is considered for parole. “These were crimes committed in our community in the middle of the day for greed, money, and fame,” said Judge Jennifer Mitchell. Man convicted of murdering Young Dolph requests new trial Johnson's attorney said additional years to a life sentence would be excessive. He maintained Johnson was never a leader in this crime. "The individuals that were on the ground in front of that cookie store that day were not leaders in an offense. They were manipulated by others," defense attorney Luke Evans said. But the prosecution stressed Johnson already has several aggravated assault convictions, extreme criminal behavior and is a danger. "The risk of life of individuals other than the vicitm in the case, the state would ask you to set maximum sentences," said Assistant District Attorney Paul Hagerman. On September 26, Johnson was found guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and convicted felon in possession of a handgun. ► MORE ON YOUNG DOLPH Last Friday, Johnson filed a motion requesting for a new trial saying the evidence presented during trial was insufficient. The motion asked the court to vacate his sentence and get a new trial. A hearing for Johnson's new trial is set for Dec. 12.
