INDIANAPOLIS -- A family is looking for answers after a 17-year-old was shot to death on Halloween night in a neighborhood on the far east side of Indianapolis.
Police are still investigating what led to the deadly shooting on Brook Crossing Lane. The family of the victim, who lived near the scene of the shooting, said the victim left home just minutes before he was killed.
Just after 7:30 p.m. Thursday, with kids still out trick-or-treating, neighbors in Brookwood Crossing along Cumberland Road reported hearing a half dozen gunshots.
Police were quickly called and found a 17-year-old shot to death in the road.
"I just can't believe this happened," said the victim's great aunt Tracey Russell. "I'm just tired of the gun violence."
The family of Dashawn Gilbert described the victim as a quiet kid, who loved his brother and stayed out of trouble.
"He didn't cause harm to nobody," said Donald Gilbert, the victim's grandfather. "He was a good kid."
The teen was a senior at Warren Central High School. A spokesperson for the Warren Township School District sent the following statement:
The entire MSD of Warren Township community is saddened to hear of the death of 17-year-old Dashawn Anthony Gilbert, a senior at Warren Central High School. Gilbert was set to graduate this December and was well-liked by his teachers and those who knew him. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this difficult time. Grief support and counseling is being provided to students and staff at the high school and throughout the Warren community.

"We never had any issues with him," said Kareem Hines with New Breed of Youth.
The 17-year-old also took part in Hines' New BOY youth mentoring program.
"He was on his way and doing well in school," Hines said. "He wasn't an issue in the community to our knowledge. Truly an unfortunate loss to his family and to our New BOY family."
Gilbert's death marked the ninth juvenile homicide in Indianapolis this year.
That is less than half of last year's total on the same date, when there were 19 youth homicides. It's also the lowest number on this day for any year going back to 2018.
"I think we are starting to move the needle to not having gun violence being the default reaction," said Hines.
For their part, Gilbert's family pleaded with the public for help locating the killer. The family is still hoping the shooter can be held accountable for their actions.
"I just want anybody that knows anything to talk to the family or the authorities so we can get this resolved," said Russell. "My family has suffered a lot."
So far no arrests have been made in the case. Anyone with information about the incident should call Detective Jose Torres at the IMPD Homicide Office at (317) 327-3475 or e-mail him at [email protected].
