INDIANAPOLIS -- Borrowing a theme used by the campaign of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jennifer McCormick, INDEMS Chairman Mike Schmuhl said his party’s closing message revolves around commonsense solutions. ”I think that we’ve seen over the last 20 years Republicans who have been governor, and we see where that’s gotten us, kind of at the bottom of the barrel of a lot of rankings,” Schmuhl said. Most voters feel election anxiety is on the rise But it’s not just the governor’s race he said the party is watching closely — if Democrats win four more seats in the Indiana House this election cycle, they will effectively end the House’s 12-year-long Republican supermajority. ”We have a lot of Republicans already in office, and I think we just need more balance in our state’s politics,” Schmuhl said. ”I think that Braun, Beckwith, these other candidates are just a little too extreme, so we’re the party of commonsense.” Political consultant Tony Samuel, the former co-chair for the 2016 Trump Campaign in Indiana, said for the Indiana GOP, the closing message is all about the pocketbook issues Hoosiers face every day. ”The message is improving Indiana even more,” Samuel said. ”Improving Hoosier lives economically, just you know, as far as people’s opportunities, education, healthcare.” Recent polls show former President Donald Trump has the same commanding lead in Indiana as he did in 2020 — a lead Samuel said will most likely trickle down to the state’s down-ballot races. What’s the most important issue to Hoosier voters? ”Jennifer McCormick is too liberal for Indiana,” Samuel said. “Her policies show it, her campaigning shows it, her past history shows it. Hoosiers want that conservative, Republican approach.” But no matter whom you support, many Republicans and Democrats can agree on one thing. ”Make sure that you vote, regardless of party,” Schmuhl said. “Find your polling location, go to indianavoters.com, make a plan to vote this weekend early, or on Election Day on Tuesday.”
