Catholic Charities launches Manitowoc telehealth service
Nov 01, 2024
MANITOWOC, WI (WFRV) - Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Green Bay and St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Manitowoc now offer teleservices on the Lakeshore.
The new assistance comes at a time when mental health experts are warning about wintertime depression.
The new Telehealth service site offers a private kiosk where individuals can access services and assistance using a secure computer.
A Catholic Charities member will be on-site every Tuesday morning from nine to eleven if a user has any questions.
Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is a form of clinical depression that comes around when the season changes.
Shorter days and less sunlight are major triggers. It can actually cause a change in brain chemistry which is why doctors recommend light therapy.
"As we transition into the fall, that's when the symptoms typically begin as the days are getting shorter," explained Psychology Researcher Kelly Rohan. "The end of daylight savings time is a really big trigger for a lot of people with winter depression. They tend to come out of work for that first time on Monday, and it's suddenly dark, which was not the case the Friday before."
"We know that people in the area need assistance," said Karmen Lemke, Executive Director of Catholic Charities. "More importantly, they need to work with an agency they can trust and where they feel supported. Through a partnership with the parish, we can provide assistance locally. People can still come to our Green Bay, Menasha, or Marinette offices, but the parish site allows them to connect with us closer to home."
