DC increases security measures for Election Day

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) -- The nation's capital is on high alert as D.C. city leaders prepare security measures for Election Day and the days after.
Some businesses near the White House are boarding up just in case things get out of hand.
"This is just a proactive measure, and there's no need for any alarm," Pamela Smith, Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia said.
Smith says there will be more law enforcement throughout the city starting Election Day and the days after.
"We will remain vigilant and ready and prepared to address any issues of concern that may arise across our city," Smith said.
Law enforcement say right now there are no credible threats, but businesses near the White House are boarding up as a precaution. D.C.'s police chief has a message for those looking to do harm.
"We will not tolerate any riots. We will not tolerate the destruction of property. We will not tolerate any unlawful behavior," Smith said.
In a statement, the U.S. Secret service said in part, “The U.S. Secret Service is constantly monitoring events occurring within the vicinity of the White House and other protected facilities in the D.C. area."
George Washington University political expert Todd Belt says a lot of the concern speaks to how divided the nation is going into this election.
"Whoever wins half of the country is going to be very, very angry," Belt said.
Belt says another issue for law enforcement will be securing polling locations.
"I don't know that they will have as much of a police presence or a National Guard presence in force to deter any potential attacks," Belt said.
Not only is D.C. preparing for Election Day fallout, but officials are also preparing for the Jan. 6 election certification and inauguration.
