(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Community members around the City are no strangers to Ford Amphitheater's concert noise argument--so to put an end to the discussion, the City of Colorado Springs shared an independent sound study that has found the music venue compliant. The City shared a full independent report on Friday. Nov. 1, that measured concert noise from the Ford Amphitheater during three October concerts: Foreigner, Ivan Cornejo, and Godsmack. Mayor issues letter following Ford Amphitheater meeting During the three concerts, the City monitored sound from different locations in the neighborhood near Ford Amphitheater, and locations varied per concert. The study was conducted by Hankard Environmental, Inc. and was commissioned by the City after receiving noise complaints from neighbors. “The purpose of this study was to get a better understanding of the sound levels that neighbors are experiencing during concerts and to ensure the City has an independent and professional analysis of the impact,” said Travis Easton, deputy chief of staff of infrastructure and development. “Although the amphitheater is meeting the requirements of its development plan, we understand the noise has been disruptive to some neighbors in that area. We remain committed to working with neighbors and the amphitheater as it makes adjustments to further lessen these impacts.”  Ford Amphitheater holds open house to answer questions The study found that sound levels depended on the area, and that atmospheric conditions played a "significant role" in the propagation of sound. In some areas of the community, the concert was clearly audible, while in others, traffic noise and concert sound mixed. To remain compliant, noise levels should not exceed more than 110 decibels (dB) once in five minutes. The report found two concerts exceeded the 110 dB limit, but not more than once during any five-minute period. Maximum levels did not exceed the limit at all during the Foreigner concert. City finds Ford Amphitheater compliant in noise readings Previously, VENU, owner of Ford Amphitheater, had conducted its own study of noise levels, over three concerts from Aug. 9 to Aug. 11. That study also measured the music venue compliant. Now, VENU is actively studying its noise levels throughout its concert season and is preparing a final report that will provide data from every 2024 concert — a requirement of the development plan approved by the City Council in 2023. VENU and City officials are currently working on a timeline for sound mitigation efforts. The City said this will happen ahead of the amphitheater's 2025 concert season which is expected to begin in May.
